What are the challenges you face when testing graphene?
on: August 8, 2013, 12:58

As a National Measurement Institute (NMI), NPL develops the metrology of surface and nanoanalysis techniques for the characterisation of products or samples ranging from biotechnology to semiconductor devices, with a focus on how they can be used directly by industry.

We are applying this knowledge to the electrical, structural and chemical characterisation of graphene and 2-D materials for techniques such as Raman spectroscopy, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), ellipsometry and Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM). We are also looking at how techniques that are less established in this field can be applied, or new techniques can be developed.

Input directly from the industry itself is very important for us and others to understand the challenges that need to be overcome, so please use this sub-forum to share any issues that you have yourselves, that you think the industry overall has, or maybe technical barriers that you have had to find a solution to but you want to improve.

Information that you may want to include when you make a new topic:

    How is your graphene produced?
Is your graphene in solution or on a substrate?
What characterisation techniques do you use?
Are there are methodologies you believe are required?
What applications would the graphene be used for?
What are the most important parameters you require?
What kind of accuracy do you require?
How do you perform your quality control? For example, in-situ, or offline testing on a test sample from a batch.

Hopefully this can promote discussion on how to promote good practice and develop methodologies or techniques, and ultimately lead to solutions, even if not in the short term!
